Credit goes to the Kansas City Star for using the phrase “unborn child” in its headline, “Boyfriend charged with capital murder in deaths of Olathe woman, their unborn child.”The editors, like Johnson County Prosecutor Steve Howe, give that child equal standing with the mother in the eyes of the public as well as before the law. Ashley Harlan, 23, was about 20 weeks pregnant when she and her baby were murdered. On the day she was killed, in fact, she had intended to find out the sex of the child.
Ashley Harlan and “boyfriend” Devonte Wash.Ironically, right next to the article about the murders on the Star home page is an article reporting challenges to a new Missouri dealing with medication-induced abortions. In a statement to the Star, Comprehensive Health of Overland Park and a St. Louis-based Planned Parenthood insist, “Medication abortions are incredibly safe, with less than 1 percent of patients experiencing major complications.”
The irony, of course, is that KCK man Devonte Dominique Wash, 26, is facing the death penalty for killing a baby in the womb while the abortionists at Planned Parenthood do so on a daily basis with impunity. This irony is lost on Star reporter Judy Thomas who expresses not a hint of discomfort with the contention that these abortions are “incredibly safe.” If the unborn children had a voice, one suspects they would disagree.
Another prominent word in the first headline is “boyfriend.” As the Sentinel reported last week, that word finds its way into murder stories much too often. Social scientists have been studying the boyfriend phenomenon for at least 25 years. All studies have come to the same approximate conclusion. Other than abortionists, boyfriends may well represent the most dangerous element in a child’s life.
Marget Sanger hoped “to prevent the sexual and racial chaos into which the world has drifted.”A Missouri study, for instance, found the possibility of fatal maltreatment of a child was raised eight times if the child was living with unrelated adults, “primarily in households including biologically unrelated adult males and boyfriends of the child’s mother.” Studies done in Britain suggest the risk is even higher.
Devonte Wash had high risk written all over him. As the baby’s mother knew, Wash has at least two other children with two other women about whom he boasted on his Facebook page. On Facebook, he also posted angry exchanges with these women.
The original and sustaining goal of Planned Parenthood is population control. Through birth control founder Margaret Sanger wanted women to be free to enjoy active sex lives without having to give birth. Abortion extended that freedom and erased all consequences. The left endorses abortion and does nothing to discourage the boyfriend phenomenon. Tragically, each in its own way helps fulfill Margaret Sanger’s original mission.
